Thank you Gina and Meredith for the insightful interview. I kept finding notable quotes, like, "... works that hold nuances and interest throughout even on a second (and forty-second) read, once the reader knows 'what happens next.'” and "Look, rejection is hard. It sucks. But it’s informative." You said things in a way I could easily grasp. I felt better informed after reading your interview. Thank you.

As someone who will be trying to sell a book this coming year, this was an absolutely invaluable read. Thanks to both of you for taking the time to educate us!

I loved reading this. It's so fresh to get an editor's take. And I have found that everything she's said here is true of most of the editors I know.

It's always a good sign when your book gets a critique. I revised my novel with the feedback of a couple of very helpful agents (it helps when they had essentially identical comments). They didn't end up representing me, but my book got placed with another agent and sold.

Like Polly, that particular line stood out to me to. Good to be reminded that an editor might not be the right one for your book, but the idea is still solid.

"...if it doesn't punch you in the gut you're not the right editor for it."
I love that line and this whole interview. Nice work. Rejection is tough, but at the end of the day, I'd much rather be rejected a million times as long as I end up with the "right" most enthusiastic editor who loves the writing and the idea. Having the wrong editor say yes, only to slog through the literary swamps together...is not good for my mental health, life balance...or my writing.

What a wonderful interview -- and interviewee! It helps so much to get a glimpse of the person on the other side and to understand her struggles, too.

Thank you, both, for an insightful and informative interview. Rejection is so hard, and I always have to tell myself that it is NOT personal. Once I get over that, I'm able to extract valuable lessons from a rejection.

Thank you for your thoughts, Gina. I'm working on a non-fiction manuscript now and have tried to use the rejection as a positive way to improve the book. I think that's the only way successful writers become successful.

Thank you, Meredith, for hosting such an informative interview and thank you, Gina, for your generous insights. I love these peeks into an editor's mind.
