Who is the Recovering Creative, and where did she go?
I’m the Recovering Creative. I’ve posted here about overcoming fears related to money. I shared a few stories. People were interested; they related and asked for more. I got emails. I also got stumped.
Actually I got scared—and not because I was writing about something personal—because I was writing about money.
If there is such a thing as a good relationship with money—and I believe there is—that is what I want. This is my year of finding out how.
It is not a financial necessity that I change my thinking, my spending, my ways with money. But it is an emotional necessity, a desire, a goal I’ve had for quite some time. I’m willing to believe that my relationship with money can be better. And this improvement will make me happier in ways that far transcend and surpass money.
As Gretchen Rubin did in The Happiness Project, I’m going to spend this year in research mode. Gretchen sought to “test-drive every principle, tip, theory, and research-study result” she could find that related to happiness “from Aristotle to St. Therese to Benjamin Franklin to Martin Seligman to Oprah” to determine which “advice actually works.” I’ll focus much the same way, but with the magnifying glass steadily on money.
Galileo Galilei said: “All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.” Exactly what I aim to do.

How cool! As you know, I have my own complicated relationship with money. I don’t need to change it for financial reasons, like you said, but for emotional reasons. It has too much power over me, and causes me way too much worry. Plus, I think it does inhibit creativity when it becomes so consuming.
I look forward to reading more!
Interesting idea for a blog! I look forward to reading more.
What an intriguing idea, Meredith. Since I’m so conflicted and inconsistent about money myself, I really look forward to reading your coming posts.
This is a fascinating idea, Meredith. I, too, am looking forward to reading your posts on this topic. I think most people could definitely have a better relationship with money.
You hit it Meredith. Feel the same way about money. What I don’t know about money would fill the Grand Canyon. Really! I will be tuning into your progress. Sounds like you have generated lots of interest already and with good reason. This is a great idea. You go girlfriend!
Money. It seems to be a problem for many women. Me, included. I read a book about this once called the Energy of Money. The way I’ve handled my accounts in 2009, or the way the world has inserted itself, makes me wonder if I need to read that book again. I’ll certainly be interested in seeing what you have to say and learn about the subject. It can be a complicated one in so many ways.
Oooh, looking forward to reading about this most interesting complicated relationship, Meredith!
Looking forward to it!
Looks like an interesting year ahead. I’m look forward to what your research reveals about your relationship with money. I’ve always thought that I had a very practical one. We’ll see.
Sounds fascinating. I can’t wait to see how it goes.
This sounds like an interesting experiment, and I think we’ll all benefit from reading your observations!
I think this will be a great topic! This past year really has me having to look at my relationship with money and how I can change it for the positive.
I cannot wait to hear about your experiences. I have a bad relationship with money since I’m very good at not making myself aware of it so I’d love to see what works and/or doesn’t work for you!
There’s a phrase in the Bible somewhere about how giving leads to getting. I forget how it goes, mostly because I’m typing this comment smack dab in the middle of my afternoon slump so my brain is being mean and not allowing me to access that info at this given moment. But I’ve always thought it was true. The more money you give to others (charity, people in need) and the less attached you are to money in general, the more money you make. It seems to be some sort of universal law.
Anyway, looking forward to reading what you learn.
Very, very cool. I’m keeping my eyes glued to your blog, because I have the very same fear. Good luck, sister! You’re an inspiration.
