Left-Brain Gumbo with Tom McCranie

Mathematics is about as left brain as you can get. While attempting to integrate from minus infinity to plus infinity a seemingly ever expanding equation that in itself may be equations, the left brain constantly recalls and applies defined principles. Little room is there for right brain activity. However, we have heard stories of Eureka moments when a mathematician/scientist has resolved perplexing problems while daydreaming—while allowing the brain to meander in its own way. Was the brain clicking away like a computer applying a series of entities to the problem until a solution was found, or did the right brain kick in, find a novel solution, and let the left brain fill in the details? Many left brains are still filling in the details to Einstein’s Eureka moment, E=mc2(c-squared).

Left-brain Gumbo explores how a left-brain thinker views and transitions into the right-brain world.

Thanks for writing about this, Meredith. As someone who considers mathematics a foreign language, I really appreciate reading about Tom!

All the credit goes to Tom. He's got this ability to make things like math seem so much friendlier!
